Data Protection

Data Protection is very important to all voluntary sector organisations.  The Data Protection Act 1998 (DPA) applies to anyone holding information about living individuals in electronic format and in some cases on paper.  They must follow the eight data protection principles of good information handing.  These are:

Personal information must be:

  1. Fairly and lawfully processed
  2. Processed for specified purposes
  3. Adequate, relevant and not excessive
  4. Accurate and, where necessary, kept up to date
  5. Not kept for longer than is necessary
  6. Processed in line with the rights of the individual
  7. Kept secure
  8. Not transferred to countries outside the European Economic Area unless there is adequate protection for the information.

The most important source of information on Data Protection is the Information Commissioner's Office www.ico.gov.uk.  It holds extensive information on the holding of information by organisations and also on the rights of the individual.
