Surviving the Downturn

We are living in difficult times.

Voluntary organisations and social enterprises are struggling to keep going against a backdrop of reduced funding from statutory agencies, smaller amounts of philanthropic and charitable funding available to them and customers with less money to spend.

Therefore Midlothian Voluntary Action, Midlothian Council and the Social Enterprise Alliance Midlothian (SEAM) have worked together to develop a guide to surviving the recession. It is aimed at Chief Officers and Boards in the Midlothian Third Sector who may have difficult decisions to make over the next few months.

The Guide aims to provide some thoughts on what organisations can be doing now to maximise their income and deal with current costs. It looks at how organisations can reward existing staff in the absence of pay rises, and gives guidance to organisations that may be considering restructuring to survive.

Finally, if all else fails it looks at what needs to be done to wind up an organisation.

At all stages the Guide aims to identify local sources of guidance. We recognise that the next year or two wil be very difficult for organisations, and chief officers and Boards will have their full support.
